TIPS FOR TEACHING ABOUT MUSLIMS IN THE CONTEXT OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HISTORY

Based on over 16 years of experience in providing education about Muslims and their beliefs to social sciences and history teachers, ING makes the following recommendations for educational resources to find quality curriculum materials.

As is done with other faiths, differentiate between the teachings of Islam and the cultural practices of some Muslims. This is especially important if you are referring to news articles about current events.

To reduce the potential of hate crimes and incidences against American Muslims in the U.S. and to change stereotypical perceptions, we recommend NOT using:

* The fictional books titled "Shabanu, Daughter of the Wind," "The Beduin's Gazelle," and "Seven Daughters and Seven Sons" as complements to your teaching of Islam and Muslims; these titles present an extremely narrow and stereotypical view of Islam and Muslim cultures.

* The film "Not Without My Daughter" as a tool to teach about Islam and Muslims. It was released during the Gulf War and presents a negative and stereotypical view of Muslims – not unlike many Hollywood productions.

* The media or Hollywood films in general as an authoritative source on Islam or Muslims.

We suggest you refer to our recommended list of educational resources for social sciences curriculum materials that are more suitable for studies related to Muslims and their practices.
