Mark Your Calendars: ING Participates in ISNA Convention, July 4th Weekend
ING will be participating in the upcoming ISNA Annual Convention this 4th of July Weekend in Washington D.C., joining thousands of American Muslims in exploring this year’s fitting theme, “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Maha Elgenaidi, ING president will be speaking in a main session titled “Women in the Public Square: Reclaiming our Heritage,” where she will join other Muslim women activists in discussing the important role of Muslim women in addressing and breaking down stereotypes both within our community as well as the general society while standing firmly within Islamic tradition.
ING founding member Ameena Jandali will take part in the main session “Foundation to Facilitation: The Pillars of Islam;” and both ING members will participate in a long running feature of the convention, “Answering Difficult and Frequently Asked Questions about Islam and Muslims,” which outlines guidelines for answering difficult questions before allowing the audience to ask their own FAQ’s of the panel. For more information about ING’s events at the ISNA Convention, go to: http://www.ing.org/events/events.asp?num=662
Save the Date – October 3, 2009, ING Annual Supporters Dinner
This year ING annual Supporters Dinner will be held on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 between 6 and 9 pm. The event promises to be as educational and eventful as ING’s past dinners, and features as the keynote speaker, Dr. Charles Haynes, Constitutional scholar at the First Amendment Center. He writes and speaks extensively on religious liberty and religion in American public life. Also speaking will be ING board members Dr. Isha Abdullah, Stanford researcher and physician, and Randy Pond, EVP at CISCO Systems. Entertainment for the evening will be Aron Kader, a comedian based in Hollywood at the Comedy Store and a founding member of The Axis of Evil Comedy Tour. Location: Hyatt Regency Hotel in Santa Clara. More details to follow in the coming weeks.
Call to Action: Islamic Speakers Bureau (ISB) National Trainings As the need for qualified speakers on the topic of American Muslims has increased in recentyears, communities have understood the importance of having a professional outreach organizational structure. In response to requests from diverse communities across the country, ING conducted Islamic Speakers Bureau trainings recently in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Louisville, Kentucky, and Washington, D.C. If you or your community is interested in increasing its religious literacy and outreach capabilities, contact ING for a local training. To learn more, see: http://www.ing.org/about/page.asp?num=11

ING Healthcare Presentation at Kaiser Richmond, 06/16
On June 16th an ING trainer delivered a presentation on “End of Life Issues” to over 50 physicians at Kaiser Permanente in Richmond, California as part of an interfaith panel that included a rabbi discussing Judaism’s view on the same topic. The lunch hour presentation covered some of the religious beliefs and traditions in both religions relating to the end of life, death, and mourning that highlighted cultural issues that might impact healthcare providers.
Women in Islam at San Jose State University on 6/10 and Piedmont Gardens on 6/22
ING speakers delivered presentations on “Women in Islam” at two very different venues in June, the first for a class at San Jose State University on June 10th, and the second at a retirement home, Piedmont Gardens, on June 22nd. While the audiences were quite different the interest and questions were quite similar with both groups voicing appreciation for hearing an alternative narrative to the one that is generally presented in the media.
