This is a special fundraising event for Waritheen mosque, one of the oldest and most active mosques in the Bay Area. As immigrant communities have grown and prospered in the US, it is vital that our African American brothers and sisters are also growing and prospering in their communities. Immigrants and their children have directly benefited from the struggles, sacrifices, and achievements of the civil rights movement; it is time that all of us acknowledge this debt and play our part in giving back and putting into practice the principal that charity begins at home. Events of Interest:

Ceremony at Buddhist Chung Tai Zen Center, 5/11/08

In commemoration of the Buddha’s Birthday, the Chung Tai Zen Center hosted a special ceremony on Sunday, May 11 that included leaders from different faith communities. The ritual is known as the “Bathing the Buddha” ceremony; by bathing the Buddha, Buddhists believe they are purifying their minds, similar to practices in other faiths. The event also included a dedication of gratitude to all parents in celebration of Mother’s Day. ING’s president, Maha Elgenaidi was one of the invited speakers, and began her remarks with appreciation for the Zen Center’s interfaith efforts, particularly their recent outreach with Muslims. She emphasized the importance for both faiths to engage in outreach work and educate others about their respective beliefs, and recognized such efforts by the Venerable Jian Hu Shifu, who presided over the ceremony. She stressed the commonalities between the two faiths and the continued cooperation between the two groups, particularly here in the Bay Area, where there is much that they can share and work jointly together. She concluded by paying tribute to mothers, on the occasion of Mother’s Day, citing the numerous prophetic traditions that emphasize the importance of reverence towards and kindness to mothers.

May Presentations at Bay Area High Schools, 5/02 – 5/14/08

ING speakers addressed high schools across the Bay Area in May as the school year draws to a close. Ameena Jandali spoke to two Comparative Religion classes at St. Ignatius College Prep on Friday, May 2nd, accompanied by two speakers in training. Two speakers, Uzma Husaini and Amany Nasser delivered three presentations at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward on May 7th and 8th, where ING speakers have been presenting for years. Three ING speakers, Maha Elgenaidi, Aisha Morgan, and Khushroo Shaikh visited a total of four classes at Mona Vista High School on May 13th and 14th., where they delivered both an Orientation on Islam and Muslims in the context of world history, as well as an overview on Women in Islam, as did Ameena Jandali, who addressed four classes over two days on May 8th and 12th at Oakland High school. Many high schools try to incorporate education about Islam and Muslims, either as part of their world history curriculum, or in private schools, in comparative religion classes. ING has seen a dramatic jump in the number of requests from high schools in recent years, as more teachers try to address current events in the world, which often involve Muslims. An ING speaker also addressed the entire K-8th student body on Friday, May 9th after their prayer services at St. Paul Episcopal School in Oakland. The 30 minute overview on Islam and Muslims was attended by all ages and grades, but the students remained engaged throughout, both responding to and asking questions. They paid tribute to this sharing of faiths by concluding with a song titled, “As-salaamu alaikum, “which is the Islamic greeting of peace that is shared by Jews and Christians: “Shalom Aleichem” in Hebrew or “peace be unto you” in English.
