Imam W. Deen Mohammed Speaking in the Bay Area Sunday, April 20th, 2-5PM Topic: “The Religion of Originality (Fitrah) and Muslim Identity”. Location: Masonic Auditorium, 1111 California Street, San Francisco Free Admission Imam Warith Deen Mohammed is an influential American Muslim leader and the son of Clara and Elijah Muhammad. After his father’s death, Warith Deen Mohammed was accepted by followers of the Nation of Islam as their leader. Immediately rejecting his father’s theology and separatist views, he brought many reforms which brought the followers of the Nation of Islam to accept traditional Islamic beliefs and practices. He renamed his organization a number of times and is now a leader of a new project called The Mosque Cares. W.D. Mohammed was the first Muslim to give the invocation in the U.S. Senate. In 1993, he gave an Islamic prayer during the first Inaugural Interfaith Prayer Service of President Bill Clinton, and again in 1997 at the second Interfaith Prayer Service. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear one of the greatest thinkers and pioneers of the African American Muslim community. Events of Interest: “Faith in Action Training Series,” Holy Redeemer Church, 3/31/08 An ING speaker joined an interfaith panel of speakers to address issues relating to social and economic justice in different faith traditions at a “Faith in Action Training Series” event held at the Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church in San Jose on Monday, March 31st in the evening. Each faith representative was asked to answer questions relating to their respective faith tradition’s teachings on economic and social justice, including issues of social service and charity. The ING speaker shared some of Islam’s teachings relating to the topic, such as the belief in the universal brotherhood/sisterhood of all people, the importance of justice for all people, and the many injunctions to share one’s wealth with those less fortunate, not only through mandatory charity, or Zakat, but through voluntary charity and acts of goodness. The event was sponsored by the Interfaith Council on Religion, Race, Economic and Social Justice. Council for the Advancement of Muslim Professionals, 3/29/08 ING’s president Maha Elgenaidi was the keynote speaker at the Council for the Advancement of Muslim Professionals’ (CAMP) 2nd annual Leadership Summit, “Building Excellence in Leadership” held in Princeton, New Jersey on Saturday, March 29. The event was a networking conference of Muslim professionals that helps connect hundreds of leading Muslim industry innovators and professionals, teach new strategies, and learn how Muslim professionals are driving innovation and change in various fields. Maha first spoke on a panel on Education and Youth where panelists addressed how to support Muslim youth in building their capacity and maintaining their religious identity. She then delivered a keynote address, where she spoke about her path and transition from the for profit sector, as a Marketing Analysis Manager, to management of the not for profit ING and her message to Muslim professionals to apply their skills, knowledge and education to the community’s growth & development, and to get involved by helping to build sustainable Islamic organizations, either by directly joining their boards, funding existing organizations, or initiating new organizations to fill a need. She emphasized that not for profits should be run like for profits with an emphasis on their impact and professionalism in operations particularly in the areas of governance, finance, and resource management. She emphasized the importance of not for profit work, especially in our current political climate, and emphasized that working for a nonprofit should be as attractive – or more so – than working in the for profit sector. Orientation on Islam for YMCA of Santa Clara Valley, 3/27/08 Ismael Nass, ING’s veteran speaker provided an Orientation on Islam and Muslims to a group of YMCA staff members who were interested in educating themselves about other faiths. After describing the basic tenets and practices of the religion, he entertained questions about various issues relating to Muslim Americans, including women’s issues. The conversation was interactive throughout, with the staff members expressing their interest in similarities with their faith. Esalen Institute Dialogue on the Abrahamic Family, 3/24/08 ING’s president Maha Elgenaidi participated in a dialogue at Esalen Institute on the Abrahamic faiths. The workshop brought together Muslims, Christians, and Jews from the San Francisco Bay area, greater Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, and New York to take an inventory of networks and organizations doing work in interfaith, and share experiences and compare notes on the questions and issues that most preoccupy our Jewish, Christian, and Muslim constituencies. Discussed were the best educational information and most effective ways of disseminating it to achieve the goal of building true interfaith/interpersonal trust. Maha shared with the group ING’s interfaith initiatives which include an ING-JCRC partnership and the Interfaith Speakers Bureau.
