OUTREACH
TO MEDIA: EDITORIALS & ING PRESS CONFERENCE
War
in Iraq | Media Outreach
Our outreach program to the local media involved several different elements. We first contacted the Editors of four major newspapers in the area: San Francisco Chronicle, San Jose Mercury, Oakland Tribune, and the Contra Costa Times and asked them to publish editorials written by veteran ING speakers. Three of the four editorials were published. Links for the three that have been published are below.
Our most crucial effort was the ING Press Conference held on Monday March 24th, 2003, which included representatives of diverse communities, schools, government and law enforcement agencies. The press conference served to highlight the potential impact of war on school children of ME & Muslim Background, offering tools and resources to help schools prevent hate & respond to hate. Speaking at the conference were two young Muslim women who shared both their negative & positive experiences in schools. Guests who spoke at or were in attendance at the conference included:
-Ameena Jandali, Islamic Networks Group
-Rich Garcia, San Jose School Board
-Linda Murray, San Jose School District Superintendent
-Paul Perotti, Santa Clara School District Superintendent
-Supervisor Pete McHugh, Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors
-JimMcAntee, Santa Clara County Human Relations Commission

The Press Conference generated reports from several major media outlets in the Bay Area. Five of the major television news networks in the Bay Area aired reports on their evening edition news programs, they included: NBC11, KGO-TV, KPIX, KRON & Telemundo. Reports were also aired on KQED radio, KGO-radio, and KLIV-radio throughout the day on Monday and early morning on Tuesday. In addition, the San Francisco Chronicle, San Jose Mercury & several Asian newspapers published articles on Thursday March 27th, 2003 about the Press Conference as well. Overall, the response from the media was very encouraging. Reports from one media reproduction and research company suggested that the television reports alone reached a total estimated audience nearing half a million people.
The media outreach program is an ongoing priority at ING. Although,
the war generated several important discussions, our objective was
to highlight the importance of providing a safe and tolerant environment
for our youth and to prevent any hate crimes and acts of violence
from occurring. Although the war is essentially over, the uncertainty
of what lays ahead remains as long as we maintain a strong military presence in the
region. In any case, we will continue to monitor developments
about its impact in schools and will respond via the media as needed.
