ING's
RESPONSE TO THE WAR IN IRAQ
Months before the war was declared, ING had been closely monitoring news reports and developments regarding the crisis in Iraq. Despite the diplomatic efforts carried out to prevent the war, we felt the pressing need to be prepared for the worst. Our primary concern was for the safety of students of Middle Eastern or Muslim background against violence and hate crimes in schools. With the memories of the negative backlash that erupted after the Gulf War still fresh in our minds, we knew that we had to take serious measures to preempt potential problems from arising before the war was declared.
Our immediate objective was to initiate a campaign to promote a zero tolerance policy for such behavior in schools and we decided to focus our outreach in three key areas, as follows:
Outreach to Schools: Mailing Addressed to Teachers & School Administrators
Outreach to the Muslim Community: Parent-Child Workshops
Outreach
to Media: Editorials & ING Press Conference
Although the war is essentially over, the uncertainty of what lays ahead remains as long as we maintain a strong military presence in the region. As the crisis in Iraq continues, ING will also continue to do its part to establish and promote a zero tolerance policy against hate crimes and violence against students of Middle Eastern and Muslim background in schools. Please stay posted by checking our web site for any updates.
