Developing Cultural Competency: Healthcare for the Muslim Patient

The purpose of this diversity seminar is to provide healthcare providers with an understanding of the challenges of Islamophobia and its impact on Muslim health and healthcare delivery, as well as specific health care issues to help providers better understand and serve this population. The seminar begins with a description of the roots of Islamophobia and how it manifests in various institutions in the form of anti-Muslim bigotry, including on Muslim patients. The seminar then provides a better understanding of the faith and practices of Muslim Americans as well as the implications of these beliefs and practices for healthcare delivery. Topics include Islamic perspectives towards illness and healthcare, family systems, decision-making processes, dress codes, privacy and gender issues, dietary guidelines, women’s healthcare, including reproductive issues and labor and delivery, views on death and dying, end-of-life issues, emergency treatment, life support, terminal illness and palliative care. A handout detailing the above issues is also provided to attendees. The training concludes with a series of case studies of potential scenarios and the best ways to respond to them.
