DIVERSITY SEMINARS FOR LEADERS

Featured Seminar for Law Enforcement Leaders

Developing Cultural Competency: Working with American Muslim Communities

“Hate crimes merit a priority response. [We recommend agencies] complement tough laws and vigorous enforcement with education and training initiatives designed to reduce prejudice.”
- Confronting the New Faces of Hate: Hate Crimes in America, 2009 Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund (LCCREF)

Introducing a new series of professional development seminars for service organizations committed to diversity.
Designed for police chiefs, sheriffs and other command-level personnel and senior administrators, this seminar provides valuable information and resources for increasing awareness, enhancing cultural competency skills and developing relationships with American Muslim communities.

Description
The seminar begins with a discussion of common stereotypes about Muslims and their faith and resultant hate crimes committed against them in a post 9/11 environment. This is followed by an overview of Muslim demographics, practices and traditions, pertinent contemporary issues and their implications for law enforcement work. The seminar also addresses protocols for interaction with both individuals and community institutions, and provides law enforcement leaders the opportunity to share their policies and experiences serving Muslim members of the community. The seminar ends with a discussion of opportunities for cooperation.

Benefits
  • Cultural awareness and development of cultural competency skills as they relate to working with American Muslims and their institutions
  • Increased rapport, greater trust and improved communication channels between law enforcement agencies and Muslim institutions
