Venerable JianYing obtained a doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering from the Ohio State University in 1996. Under the auspices of the Grand Master Wei Chueh, Ven. JianYin was ordained in 1998 at the Chung Tai Chan Monastery. He received a Master’s degree in Buddhism from the Chung Tai Buddhist Institute for Monks in 2001. Shortly after, the Grand Master sent him back to the U.S. where he first studied Sanskrit at the University of California at Berkeley and then entered the doctoral program in Religious Studies at Rice University. He received his Ph.D. degree in May 2010, with a concentration in Buddhism. After a brief stay at the Zen Center of Sunnyvale, he returned to Chung Tai Chan Monastery where he served as a Vice Abbot and completed a secluded retreat for six months. In October 2011, the Zen Center of Sunnyvale welcomed Ven. JianYing's return as the Vice Abbot. In January 2012, the Zen Center celebrated the inauguration of Ven. JianYing as the new Abbot. In the spirit of “not attaching oneself to any perspective,” JianYing Shifu strives to bring theories and practices together so as to embrace all.
