ING services schools, grades 7th - 12th in the following eight San Francisco Bay Area counties: Marin, San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Monterey.

Since 1989, Islam, like other religions, has been required curriculum in the context of World History and Social Studies. It is taught in 7th grade, and again in high school grades 9th, 10th or 12th. ING supplements existing curriculum by offering designed presentations about Islam that are delivered by Muslim-Americans who bring the subject to life and answer questions from students to both inform and dispel stereotypes.

Presentations titles for grades 7th-12th are the following:

-Orientation on Islam & Muslims in the Context of World History and Social Studies
-Islamic Contributions to Civilizations
-Roots of Islam in America
-Women in Islam

Since the inception of the program in the 1993-1994 academic school year, we have seen a steady incline in the number of teachers that have contacted us for a presentation. The history of activity is as follows:

Activity by region was as follows: 46 schools in South Bay; 59 schools in East Bay; 31 in San Mateo; 24 in San Francisco; 7 in Monterey; and 17 in Marin. The drop in penetration is due to a drop in school visits in Monterey and South Bay bureaus. Reasons may be new activity of other Islamic organizations that duplicate ING's work in the South Bay (MCA dawah committee & the Imam in SBIA). Of the 184 schools we visited, 45 were high schools (24%).

1997 - 1998 SCHOOL YEAR

1995 - 1996 SCHOOL YEAR

- Visited 134 schools out of 585 schools that received a letter (23%). The variance in the school count from last year was due to the deletion of the San Mateo county schools, which began to be handled by the AMILA group, and the addition of the Marin county schools. Activity by region was as follows: 66 schools in East Bay; 45 in South Bay; 13 in Monterey; 9 in San Francisco; 1 in Marin.

- With 134 schools visited, we spoke to approximately 402 classes comprised of 12,060 students, and approximately 200 teachers (accounting for an average of 2 classes per teacher).
