HISTORY
OF ING'S ACTIVITY WITH THE MEDIA AGENCIES
Local
and National
1993-2005
ING media programs produce the following type of media coverage and
events:
a) News articles and stories in newspapers, television, radio, and
wire services, which place Muslims in the context of family and community,
thereby balancing negative coverage and dispelling long held stereotypes
about Islam and Muslims. Generation of these involve Media Campaigns.
b) Press Releases (PR), which state position statements relating to
current events
c) Press Releases (PR), which promote Muslim conferences & events
d) Station IDs for television, resulting from media campaigns
e) Public Service Announcements (PSA's) for television and radio
f) Thematic seminars on issues relating to the Muslim world
g) Community meetings with media executive managers and senior editors

1993
FEBRUARY
- ING founded, first known as "Bay Area Media Watch." The
central goal at the time was to monitor and react to biased media
coverage relating to Islam & Muslims
FEBRUARY-SEPTEMBER
- Developed by ING, the Telephone Call-in Network was in operation
in the San Francisco Bay Area. The network reacted to media coverage
by initiating a call-in network of activists who contacted reporters
and editors protesting biased coverage relating to Islam and Muslims
APRIL
- ING's first media campaign: Bosnia Rally, involving several Bay
Area Islamic centers, gathering a crowd of 1,500 in San Francisco.
Tens of news media outlets covered the rally, leading to numerous
interviews and news articles. First of its kind Muslim media campaign
in the San Francisco Bay Area.
MAY
- Seminar: "Bay Area Media Watch" kickoff & training
for Muslim activists, which was held at Stanford University. Purpose
was to expand the Telephone Call-in Network
SEPTEMBER
- Media Campaign: 2nd Bosnia Rally, held in San Francisco. Also deemed
successful in attendance and media coverage
- ING changes its name from "Bay Area Media Watch" to Islamic
Networks Group (ING). Decides to no longer be involved in reacting
to the media but rather to be proactive through educating the media
and other public institutions about Islam and Muslim culture
- First of many proactive meetings with news media outlets. Meeting
with SF Chronicle executives and editors
- Meeting with SF Examiner executives and editors
