DEEN
INTENSIVE WITH SHAYKH ABDULLAH ADHAMI
October 25-31, 2002
When ING Co-Founders (Maha ElGenaidi & Ameena Jandali) first heard
of Shaykh Abdullah Adhami, it was through a six-tape set called, "Gender
Relations: Issues Facing Men & Women in Islam". They were
immediately impressed by his knowledge and his eloquent speaking style.
The message he conveyed was so effective that it inspired them to
call the Shaykh and invite him for the Deen Intensive sponsored by
ING from October 25th-31st, 2002.
The theme of the Deen Intensive was "Reviving Our Lost Legacy:
Muslim Women in Scholarship and Activism." Topics of the seminar
included: particulars of the female servants of Allah, issues of
"identity" and how it is defined in the Quran and Sunnah,
role of women in family and society, case examples of early Muslim
women luminaries in various facets of society (political, religious,
scholarly, etc.), hadith transmissions by women, and contributions
of women to Islamic civilization.
To accommodate all of the attendees, some of who flew up for the
event and others who drove long distances to attend, classes were
held at two locations, the Zaytuna Institute in Hayward, and Santa
Clara University. Over 200 students, men and women, attended the
week long seminar and benefited from the amazing knowledge the Shaykh
imparted. Shaykh Abdullah, no doubt, set a precedent for future
events concerning women in Islam. Everyone was impacted by his words,
and many people claimed that the experience changed their life.
Here are some quotes from those who attended:
"In all my years studying Islam I never came across such a
plethora of knowledge about women in Islam. The Shaykh definitely
inspired me to carry the torch that has been passed down to me through
the generations and keep the flames of the Muslim female luminaries
of the past brighter than ever. I am forever indebted to him and hold
him in the highest regard and ask Allah to reward him for all of his
efforts." (Sister)
"It was an extremely important subject that needed to be addressed,
especially in this day and age. A lot of the issues that were tackled
during the seminar haven't been giving the attention they deserve.
Shaykh Abdullah is an extremely warm person, very humble, and an excellent
teacher with a lot of patience." (Brother)
"It was a very profound and beneficial seminar." (Sister)
"I never cease to be amazed by Sheikh Abdullah's brilliant synthesis.
He truly sets the bar for itqan (excellence) in everything he does.
Only the mesmerized eyes of the students in his class can attest fully
to his brilliance." (Brother)
"Welcoming Shaykh Abdullah to the Bay Area was truly an honor.
The few and hidden beacons of knowledge are privy only to the spiritual
elite. But this jewel was brought to us so that we, the common Muslims,
can benefit from the light of our tradition. May Allah preserve him
and those who strive to lead the way for the rest of us." (Sister)
We were honored to have him and look forward to working with him
in years to come.
