ING
CELEBRATING 14 YEARS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE
The last fourteen years has been an unprecedented period of
transformation for Islam and Muslims in the United States. From the
launching of the Gulf war in 1991 to the more recent tragic events of
September 11th and subsequent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the image
of Islam and Muslims perpetuated by these events and media
representations have gone from bad to worse. In order to combat these perceptions, ING
has spent the past fourteen years working to provide education about
Islam and Muslims, thereby helping to eliminate stereotypes
and prevent resultant prejudice, discrimination, and hate crimes
against Muslims.
The following section of our site gives you an overview of ING's
accomplishments over the past fourteen years. Each link highlights the
impact ING's work has had, both locally in the San Francisco Bay Area,
home to one of the largest Muslim communities in the nation, and nationally
as ING's efforts are modeled by bureaus throughout the country.
(For more information about our affiliates please go to: http://www.ing.org/affiliates/default.asp).
You will also find a timeline of ING's accomplishments and history, including statistics
on completed classroom presentations, media activities, and training
in law enforcement agencies, corporations, hospitals, social services
agencies, faith groups, and other
efforts. We have also included a link to our ten year Anniversary
Dinner on November 2nd, 2002, which includes a description of the
program and photos.
We would like to express our thanks to the community for their
continued support. We
are especially grateful to the thousands of teachers and leaders in
public institutions who have continuously given us the
opportunity to define who we are as Muslim-Americans for ourselves,
rather than allowing others to define us. We only hope that your contribution to our success will continue for many more years to come!
