Contemporary Religious Issues Facing Christianity, Judaism, and Islam

ING Content Director Ameena Jandali will represent Islam in a discussion on contemporary religious issues moderated by The Right Rev. William E. Swing, Founding Trustee of United Religions Initiative and former Episcopal Bishop of California, 1980-2006. Father Miles O'Brien Riley will represent Christianity and Rabbi Lawrence Rafael Judaism.

Father Miles O'Brien Riley, PhD, founded the Communications Center for the Archdiocese of San Francisco more than 30 years ago. An entertaining presenter, Fr. Miles has conducted communication training workshops throughout the world and has received three Emmys for outstanding TV productions.

Rabbi Lawrence Raphael joined Congregation Sherith Israel (founded in 1849 Gold Rush San Francisco) in 2003 following 30 years as a faculty member and dean at Hebrew Union College in New York. He is recognized nationally as a leader in Reform Jewish education.  A mystery buff, Rabbi Raphael edited two volumes of Jewish mystery fiction and also loves Jewish stories and poetry, both of which he uses frequently during services and talks.

We will hear thoughts from each representative, then engage in a free-flowing discussion led by Bishop Swing.

The many issues that may be addressed could include how organized religions see their roles evolving in a world bifurcated by simultaneously increasing secularism and religious fundamentalism.
